In recent times, sensors and actuators have woven themselves into the very fabric of modern technology, thanks to the quantum leap of smart materials and systems, MEMS and NEMS and the burgeoning terrorism across the globe. In addition to their niches in aerospace, defense, automobiles, structural health monitoring, agriculture, food and healthcare, industrial and environmental monitoring, sensors and actuators are the key components of advanced technologies like robotics and mechatronics. Also the breakthroughs in the synthesis and understanding of nano-materials and CNTs have led to the advancement of tailored sensors, e-noses and actuators and all these portend a phenomenal growth of sensors and actuators.
Incidentally, CGCRI has been presently celebrating its Diamond Jubilee year and at the same time the DST-CSIR sponsored .Sensor Hub, Kolkata. has started functioning, where along with CGCRI, at present, Jadavpur University, Calcutta University, Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (formerly Bengal Engineering. & Science University) and Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, Kolkata have joined hands to develop, fabricate and test electronic nose, biosensors and MEMS-based sensors for food, agriculture and environmental applications. Hence, it is high time to bring researchers, academicians, entrepreneurs and students on the same platform for sharing their views, encouraging debate and propagating novel ideas so that through the synergy of science and technology, a tangible outcome fructifies at the end of the day.
