Research Interest
Functional nanocomposite coatings such as inorganic-organic hybrid nanocomposite based hard coatings on plastics, antireflective coatings, refractive index controlled coatings, protective coatings, hydrophobic coatings; Glass and ceramic materials (powders, nanofibers, silica glass shapes etc.) by sol-gel processing; Metal and semiconductor nanoparticles incorporated films for different applications (optics/coloured coatings, catalysis, plasmonic sensors); Ordered mesoporous films; Fluorescent nanomaterials; Graphene based nanocomposite materials; Gas adsorbing materials; Photocatalysis; Energy and sustainable materials.

  • Anti-scratch coatings (hard-coatings) on plastic ophthalmic lenses.
  • Hard-coatings on polycarbonate (PC) plastic sheets up to a dimension of 2 ft x 2 ft.
  • Hard-coatings on polypropylene (PP) and Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) sheets and films.
  • Antireflective (AR) coatings on plastic ophthalmic lenses and sheets.

Landmark Research Contribution
Made original contributions towards the development and successful commercialization of scratch-resistant inorganic-organic nanocomposite coatings on plastics; Notable contributions are development of silica glass shapes by sol-gel, new approaches to generating metal nanoalloys through interlayer diffusion, metal nanoparticles incorporated films with tunable plasmonic absorption, host mediated synthesis of alloy nanoparticles, ordered mesoporous alumina films on glass as reusable catalysts, highly ordered cubic mesoporous silica/titania nanofibers by electrospinning, wavelength selective antireflective coatings with hydrophobic surfaces, superhydrophobic coatings, graphene based nanocomposites for catalysis, CO2 adsorbing materials and materials for energy applications.
