Developmental Facility for designing glass art object of intricate shape for State Initiated Design Centre (SIDC), CSIR-CGCRI:


An overview on SIDC project:
The Development Commissioner (Handicraft) Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, had sponsored a project in the name of “State Initiated Design Centre” with a view to setting up training facilities for imparting training on art glass making by different techniques as well as to set up design gallery to display art glass products produce by the trainees and other artisans.

The first phase of the project has been completed and a modest facility has been created at CGCRI extension center Khurja, Uttar Pradesh and CGCRI Head office at Kolkata to impart training on making art glass by both cold and hot process. Several training programs (both theoretical and practical) have already been executed to young artisans-cum entrepreneurs under the guidance of master crafts persons and assisting the prospected entrepreneurs to set up their own studios. The programs also included conducting training to make aware of art glass to the students of art colleges, artisans and entrepreneurs to upgrade their skill in this discipline.

The design workshop is now under active operation to impart training on the following areas;
  • Stained art glass by using lead cane and copper foil
  • Kiln formed art glass
  • Glass Beads & Beaded Earrings Making
  • Glass Beads & Beaded Jewelry Making
  • Glass Beads & Beaded Bracelet Making
Further, the glass art objects of intricate shapes are being produced through designing and shaping of green products.
