The goal of DST-CSIR Sensor Hub is to develop sensors and sensor arrays (e-noses) for food, agriculture and biomedical sectors and transfer the technologies to prospective entrepreneurs


 
  1. Areas of Research:
    • Development of tea aroma sensors
    • Humidity and trace moisture sensors

  2. Sensor Hub Projects:
    • To design and develop hand-held e-nose systems for quality testing of finished tea and tea-fermentation process. This activity is concerned with the development of sensors for detection of specific group of chemical compounds (responsible for aroma) present in black tea by CSIR- CGCRI and these sensors would be used in the electronic nose to be developed by CDAC-Kolkata at DST-CSIR Sensor Hub, Kolkata.
    • Moisture evaluation with microcontroller based instruments for measuring trace moisture present in transformer oil

  3. Related projects:
    • Development of breath analyzer for detection of diabetes

  4. Technologies Developed:
    • CSIR- CGCRI has already developed a few metal oxide semiconductor sensors with the purpose of tea aroma classification. The developed gas sensors have been used to make high-sensitivity and high-selectivity electronic noses for tea aroma detection.
    • Capacitive humidity sensors using mesoporous γ-alumina have been developed. Both tape-casting and sol-gel routes have been exploited to fabricate sensors for detection of moisture in the range of 5-20 ppm. The technology for moisture detection in transformer oil has been transferred to a private entrepreneur.
    • CSIR-CGCRI has saleable technologies for LPG and CNG leak alarms, and methane and carbon monoxide sensors for detection down to 100 ppm and 5 ppm, respectively.
