Major activities
The section is involved in development of different types of oxide ceramic based materials with exotic properties to meet the diversified need of the engineering industries.
Under this programme, different types of alumina, Partially Stabilized Zirconia (PSZ), Zirconia Toughened Alumina (ZTA), Cordierite, Steatite based materials have been developed and the process parameters have been standardized.
Recently, alumina, hydroxyapatite, ?- tricalcium phosphate based different types of Bio-ceramic materials are also being developed for different bio-inert, bio-active and bio-resorbable applications. These materials have been characterized thoroughly in-vitro and in-vivo for their suitability as implant material and different types of prostheses i.e. HIP-JOINT, INTEGRAL ORBITAL IMPLANT, BONE GRAFTING MATERIALS etc. have been developed out of them. Clinical trials of these prostheses in human patients has already established their superiority over the conventional materials.
Current programme
1. Dense Si 3 N 4 based product and assorted powder
2. IR transparent AlON ceramics
3. Dy-Si-Al-O-N for high speed cutting tool and wear resistant parts
4. Pilot plant for synthesis of HBN powder and dense product
5. AlN based material with superior ballistic properties
6. AlN powder and dense product
7. (Mi,Ti,Zr,Ta,W)-Si - RBSiC material
8. Oxidation resistant C f /SiC product
9. Cellular SiC ceramics (biologically-derived)
10. SiC - oxide/nonoxide ceramic composites
