August 19-21, 2026

A series of review visits and interactions under the project “Establishment of a Centre of Innovation & a Manufacturing Eco-System for Sensors (CIMES) in Industrial IoT” was successfully conducted during 19–21 August 2026 at CSIR–Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute (CSIR-CGCRI), Kolkata, and associated CIMES facilities, including the CIMES Facility at WEBEL, Taratala, and the Sensor Fabrication Facility at Aimil Ltd.
On 19 August 2026, officials from MeitY visited the CIMES Facility at WEBEL, Taratala, to review the facility and ongoing activities under the project.
On 20 August 2026, MeitY officials and ERC members visited the CIMES Facility at CSIR-CGCRI. As part of the visit, the Sixth Expert Review Committee (ERC) Meeting was conducted to review the progress of the CIMES project, discuss future plans, and assess the milestones achieved. The meeting featured addresses by Dr. Sangeeta Semwal, Scientist 'E'/Additional Director, MeitY, GoI, Professor Bikramjit Basu, Director, CSIR-CGCRI, and Prof. Rajeev Ahuja, Director, IIT Ropar and Chairman, ERC. This was followed by a presentation by Dr. Nandini Basumallik and the CIMES Team on project progress, future plans, and milestones.
The visit programme on 20 August also included a visit to the Sensor Fabrication Facility at Aimil Ltd.(industry partner), along with interactions with project collaborators.
The programme concluded on 21 August 2026 with further interactions with collaborators and experts. The successful completion of these review visits and associated ERC activities provided valuable inputs for the continued implementation and future direction of the CIMES project.

A collaboration meeting with M/s SANROK Enterprises was held on 30.06.2026 at CSIR-Central Glass & Ceramic Research Institute (CSIR-CGCRI) in the presence of Prof. Bikramjit Basu, Director, CSIR-CGCRI. The meeting was attended by Mr. Naveen Singari, Managing Director, Mr. Girish Kathuria, Chief Operations Officer (COO), and Mr. Bikash Mallick, Head of Services & Projects, representing M/s SANROK Enterprises. The meeting provided an opportunity for meaningful deliberations towards strengthening the ongoing collaboration between CSIR-CGCRI and M/s SANROK Enterprises in the area of advanced measurement and instrumentation technologies for Indian Railways.
During their visit, the delegation visited the Centre of Innovation and a Manufacturing Eco-System for Sensors (CIMES) facility at CSIR-CGCRI, where they were shown demonstrations of the Centre's ongoing R&D activities, technological capabilities, and sensor development facilities.

The workshop “FIBER-SENSE (Fibre-optic Innovation for Beginners & Emerging Researchers: Sensing Education for Next-gen Engineers)” was successfully conducted by CIMES team on 14 January 2026 at CSIR-CGCRI, Kolkata, in the gracious presence of Prof. Bikramjit Basu, Director, CSIR-Central Glass & Ceramic Research Institute. The programme featured expert lectures on fiber optics, photonics, quantum technologies, and fiber-based sensing applications. A key highlight of the workshop was a lecture by Prof. Bhupendra Nath Dev, QuERE, TCG CREST, on quantum computing and beyond. In addition, a laboratory visit to the Fiber Optics and Photonics Division (FOPD) provided participants with exposure to advanced facilities and ongoing research activities.

The CSIR–CGCRI team, comprising eight scientists—including representatives from CIMES as well as other CGCRI scientists—and led by the Director, Prof. Bikramjit Basu, participated in the S-STEP: Workshop on Sensors held on 3 December 2025 at ELCIA/ELCITA, Bengaluru. With representatives from 30+ industries, the event focused on pathways to accelerate the deployment of fiber-optic sensing technologies in real-world applications. As part of the workshop, the team also visited four facilities, including three production units of Syscon Instruments Private Limited, Bhavani Industries, and Velankani Electronics, gaining valuable insights into ongoing industrial practices and potential areas of collaboration.

A One-day Workshop on Optical Fiber Basics and Fiber Optic Sensors was organized by the members of the Centre of Innovation & a Manufacturing Eco System for Sensors (CIMES) in Industrial IoT, Fiber Optics & Photonics Division, CSIR-CGCRI. The workshop, held on 12.09.2025, aimed to provide participants with an understanding of the fundamentals of fiber optics and photonics, along with hands-on exposure to sensor fabrication and applications. The program concluded successfully with active participation and interaction between scientists, experts, and attendees.
