IN FOCUS
Prof. R.K. Mandal, IIT – BHU, Varanasi delivered the National Science Day Lecture on ‘Three Jokes of Nature of the Last Century’ at M.N. Saha Auditorium on February 28, 2020.Students from nearby two schools were invited to attend the National Science day programme. Prior to the actual lecture, Prof. Mandal emphasised that observance of National Science Day was to widely spread a message about the importance of science and pointed out specifically that good science requires courage to ask questions and deep commitments to find answer.
In the context of Indian science in pre independence era, he remembered the invaluable contributions of Sir C. V. Raman and discovery of Raman Effect in 1928 at Indian Association of Cultivation of Science (IACS), Kolkata. He also acknowledged the contributions of Dr. Mahendra Lal Sircar for founding IACS, the only Indian research institute that was liberal in giving opportunity to people to work for the pursuit of science. In his lecture, he described (i) square root of minus one, i.e., the concept of complex number in the form of Schrodinger wave equation that correctly describe the behaviour of all the real object like molecules, atom, electrons (ii) precise linearity of quantum mechanics and (iii) discovery of quasi-crystals with icosahedral or five-fold symmetry as the three jokes of nature of the last century. Earlier, the concepts of complex mathematical functions, existence of possible states of any matter in a linear space as well as existence of quasi-crystals were unacceptable to scientific community. Dr. Mandal concluded the lecture by recalling Phil Abelson “ .. part of strength of science is that it has tended to attract individuals who love knowledge and creation of it”.
