Landmark Research Contribution

  • Designed and developed a novel approach for manufacturing osteoconductive PEEK based biocomposites with enhanced biological functions along with superior implant stiffness for orthopaedic applications. This research was conducted in an Industry R&D set-up and research findings have been successfully commercialized as a product.
  • Successfully improved osteoconductivity (or bone forming) properties of synthetic htydroxyapatite (HAp) based bone-grafts by inducing an electrostatic charge on HAp surface using electro-thermal polarization treatment which can potentially lead to faster tissue ingrowth and rapid healing by accelerating the new bone mineralization process.
  • Developed a DNA-calcium phosphate composite coated hydroxyapatite/collagen (HAp/Col) nanocomposite membrane which was demonstrated as an effective bioresorbable bone implant capable of delivering therapeutic genes intracellularly for faster repairing of bone defects.
  • Developed an indigenous processing technology to prepare a hybrid biocomposite by reinforcing high density polyethylene (HDPE) with hard and bioactive ceramic fillers. (Al2O3, htydroxyapatite) with better combination of physical properties (modulus, hardness), low friction and high wear resistance as well as improved biocompatibility which renders early stability of the acetabular cup in total hip replacement (THR) applications.
  • Successfully developed a high-throughput in vivo combinatorial transplantation model that uses a microwell type combi-cassette with different arrays of 7 or 19-wells where the wells can be loaded with different formulations of stem cells, scaffolds, growth factors and transplanted subcutaneously into immunodeficient mouse to screen for formulations that induce bone formation.
