AREA OF SPECIALIZATION: Materials Science and Technology

  • Mechanical behaviour of materials at ambient, high and low temperature under slow and nominal strain rate. Effect of material chemistry, microstructure, cold work, temperature, prior deformation etc. on the mechanical behaviour of metals, alloys, composites (metal-matrix and ceramic matrix composites).
  • Residual life estimation by measuring the degraded properties of materials including non-destructive characterization of material properties including composites.
  • High temperature oxidation of metals and alloys, effect of rare earth element additions, use of oxide scale thickness in residual life assessment of materials operating at high temperatures.
  • Friction and wear properties of metals, alloys, ceramics and composites. Thermal Barrier coatings development for high temperature alloys and their life cycle assessment.

Landmark Research Contributions

  • First to use Acoustic Emission Technique in understanding the Oxidation behaviour of Metals and Alloys.
  • First to establish that the occurrence of Breakaway oxidation in large nos. of metals and alloys at high temperature is due to mechanical failure of the scale and not due to faster diffusion of reacting species as postulated by others.
  • Established the correlation of steam side oxide scale build up in high temperature tubing with its exhausted life fraction leading to assessment of its remnant life.
  • Developed the nano-structured thermal barrier coatings doped with rare earth oxides (LaCeO2) having enhanced life cycle under severe aggressive environment.
  • Evaluated the life cycle of thermal barrier Coatings based on TGO layer growth and change in the chemistry of bond coats.
