This year, Atma Ram Memorial Lecture, 17th in series, was organized at CSIR-CGCRI, Kolkata through Webinar on October 12, 2020. .

 

The programme was inaugurated with the welcome address by Dr. K. Muraleedharan, Director, CSIR-CGCRI. Shri T. V. Narendran, Global CEO and Managing Director, Tata Steel Limited delivered the Atma Ram Memorial lecture on ‘Innovation in Materials Industry – A National Prerogative’. In his lecture, he elaborated on various opportunities for innovation in manufacturing of iron & steel and non-steel materials (composites and grapheme) in India. He also covered nationally strategic materials such as electric-vehicle battery and rare earths that are currently imported. Finally, he opined that through focused funding and collaboration between Government, Industry and Academia, a robust eco-system could be set up in India for developing new-to-the-world technologies

58th Research Council Meeting

RC Meeting in progress

58th Research Council Meeting was held on November 19, 2020 in virtual mode. The meeting was inaugurated with the opening remarks by Prof. Dipankar Banerjee, Chairman, Research Council. Dr. K. Muraleedharan Director, CSIR-CGCRI briefed the committee members on several important institutional activities that were undertaken since the previous RC meeting. Introduction of new Scientists and Technical officers to the committee members and release of CSIR-CGCRI Annual Report 2019-2020 were other two events of the 58th Research Council Meeting.

IISF 2020 – Curtain Raiser Ceremony

Curtain Raiser Ceremony of the 6th India International Science Festival 2020 was conducted through Webinar on November 30, 2020 at CSIR-CGCRI, Kolkata. The session was initiated with the welcome address and opening remarks of Shri Ashim Kumar Chakraborty Director (Acting), CSIR-CGCRI, Kolkata followed by address by Dr. Shekhar C. Mande, DG, CSIR & Secretary, DSIR. Dr. C.P. Kaushik, Associate Director, NRG BARC, Mumbai graced the occasion as chief guest. Keynote address was delivered by Prof. Debi Prasad Duari, Director, Research & Academic, M.P. Birla Institute of Fundamental Research, M. P. Birla Planetarium, Kolkata. Other dignitaries  who also participated in the webinar were Mr.Sudipa Saha, President (Operations), Prism Johnson Ltd. and Member, Research Council, CGCRI and Shri Sreeprasad M. Kuttan, Organising Secretary, Vijnana Bharati – West Bengal and Jharkhand.

Major Events 

Celebration of Independence Day

Flag hoisting for 74th Independence Day

 The 74th Independence Day was celebrated in the Institute on August 15, 2020. In presence of Dr.K. Muraleedharan, Director, CSIR-CGCRI, Independence Day flag hoisting ceremony was performed in a restricted manner due to the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic situation followed by Director’s address to the staff members through virtual mode.

Communal Harmony Campaign

Communal Harmony Observed and Flag Day 2020

Communal Harmony Campaign and Flag Day were observed during November 19 – 25, 2020 to foster the spirit of patriotism and national integration. On this occasion, a fund raising drive was also undertaken by the staff club for rehabilitation of child victims of communal, ethnic, cast or terrorist violence. A National Integration pledge was also administered in each division/section of the institute on November 19, 2020.

Hindi Week 2020 Observed

Week long ‘Hindi Week 2020’ was held at CSIR-CGCRI, Kolkata during September 14 – 18, 2020. Hindi essay writing as well as Hindi noting, drafting and terminology competitions were organized among staff members. One day science webinar in Hindi was also arranged under the above banner on September 17, 2020 where Dr. Arvind Sinha, Chief Scientist, NML, Jamshedpur delivered a lecture on ‘Biomimetic Materials Science: Learning from Nature’.

Commemoration of Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi

In order to commemorate of 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, ‘Swachchhata Abhijan’ for one week from October 5 – 9, 2020 was undertaken in and around the Institute and SIRPA & SIRSA premises involving the staff members.

CSIR-CGCRI observed Vigilance Awareness Week during October 27, 2020 – November 2, 2020. This year’s theme of observing Vigilance Awareness Week was ‘Vigilant India, Prosperous India’. In this context, a pledge was administered on October 27, 2020 through ‘MS Teams’.

Constitution Day Observed

Constitution Day observed

Constitution Day was observed on  November 26, 2020  in the Institute. In this connection, the preamble of the constitution was read at APC Roy seminar Hall of the institute where staff members participated in restricted manner due to prevailing COVID-19 pandemic situation.

Diamond Jubilee Lecture – 2020

9th Diamond Jubilee Lecture entitled ‘How Technology Continues To Change Our Lifestyle !’ was delivered by Prof. Parthasarathi Chakrabarti, Director, Indian Institute of Engineering Science & Technology (IIEST) Shibpur on September 18, 2020 at CSIR-CGCRI, Kolkata.

CSIR Foundation Day Lecture

79th CSIR Foundation Day was celebrated on virtual mode at CSIR-CGCRI, Kolkata on September 26, 2020. On the eve of CSIR Foundation Day, Dr. Shekhar C. Mande, DG-CSIR addressed the entire CSIR family on September 25, 2020. As a Chief Guest, Prof. Alicia Duran, Instituto de Ceramica y Vidrio (CSIC), Madrid, Spain and President, International Commission on Glass graced the auspicious occasion and delivered the foundation day lecture on September 26, 2020.

ERP Workshop

A Workshop on ‘CSIR ERP Version 2.1’ was organized by Dr. G. Radhakrishnan, Project Leader, CSIR Enterprise Transformation Project, CSIR, New Delhi through MS-Teams during August 25, 2020 to September 3, 2020 where a number of CSIR-CGCRI staff members, particularly from Administration, Establishment, Bills and General Section actively participated. 

Open Colloquium

Nilotpal Chowdhury, a PhD student (AcSIR) of Fiber Optics & Photonics Division presented a talk on his M. Tech thesis entitled ‘Fabrication of ytterbium-doped optical fiber through vapor phase doping technique for high power laser application’ in an open colloquium on August 7, 2020.

Transfer to CSIR-CGCRI

Dr. Joydeb Mukerji, Former Scientist and first Head of the erstwhile Non-Oxide Ceramic Division left for his heavenly abode on August 31, 2020. He mentored the Non-Oxide Ceramic group from scratch and his pioneering contributions to the above area is known internationally. All the Scientists and staff members of the present generation deeply mourn at his demise.

Under India-Poland Inter-Governmental Science & Technology cooperation programme, a collaborative project entitled ‘Cobalt containing antimicrobial bioactive glass coated urinary catheter tubing for the management of catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI)’ has been sanctioned between CSIR-CGCRI, Kolkata and AGH University of Science and Technology, Krakow, Poland on September 1, 2020.
