Bioactive glasses are widely used for bone repair and regenerative applications due to their ability to form hydroxyapatite bone mineral on the surface and their ability to naturally bond with bone. Commercial glasses such as 45S5, S53P4 and 13-93 belonging to SiO2-Na2O-CaO-P2O5 system are FDA approved. Bioactive glass compositions have been modified with components such as Li2O, K2O, MgO, SrO, B2O3, CaF2, ZnO and CuO for therapeutic effects such as osteo-stimulation, angio-genesis and anti-bacterial action. These therapeutic effects also encourage the use of bioactive glasses for many bone related problems including osteoporosis and osteomyelitis.
