परिदृष्टि

The increasing demand for maintaining pollution free environment and alarming rate of depletion of fossil fuels intensified the search for the development of clean and efficient power generating & conversion systems, and storage devices. In this context, a new division, Fuel Cell & Battery (FCBD) was formed in CSIR-CGCRI, Kolkata in December 2004. FCBD was primarily engaged in developing energy materials, and further stepped into device level technology (Stack) with ingeniously developed process and  materials.   Apart from fuel cell and Lithium battery research, FCBD renamed as Energy Materials & Devices Division (EMDD) to accommodate all upcoming research activities in the division related to the area of non-conventional energy sectors. The major areas of research as  EMDD persuading are on solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), Solid Oxide Electrolyser Cell (SOEC),  Metal-ion (Li/Na) battery (MIBs), All Solid State Metal Batteries (ASSMBs), Photo-catalytic water splitting for H2 generation (PCWS-H2), ionic and electronic conductors (MIECs), Supercapacitors and Thermoelectric Generators (TEGs).

In SOFC technology, EMDD has led to the successful demonstration for the first time in the country of 1KW working SOFC stacks under CSIR-NMITLI Projects. Following similar path, EMDD developed first-of-its-kind paper based separator (PAPERATOR) technology for Lithium/Sodium-ion Batteries and Supercapacitors under CSIR FTT program.
